Types of Sunscreen: What Type of Sunscreen Is Best?

As the seasons change, there’s one constant companion: the sun. Its warmth can uplift your mood, but its rays also carry a potent force.

Sun protection isn’t just a seasonal concern. It’s a daily ritual that lays the foundation for healthy skin. UV rays penetrate deep, triggering things like premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and, worst of all, potential skin cancer. Sun protection is crucial in preserving our skin's health for years to come. We care about your skin and preventing skin cancer.

What’s the difference between SPF formulations?
If you’re wondering, “What SPF should I use?” There are two main types of sunscreen: mineral and chemical. If you’re debating between mineral vs. chemical sunscreen, each boasts its own set of benefits catering to different preferences and skin types.

Mineral SPF

Mineral SPF is powered by natural minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which create a physical barrier that reflects UV rays away from the skin. A mineral SPF is ideal for those with sensitive skin or prone to irritation, as it sits atop the skin's surface, offering immediate protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

  • Pros: Mineral sunscreens are free from harsh chemicals, and they don’t penetrate the skin, making them a safe choice for those with sensitive skin. The absence of chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate ensures they’re Hawaii-reef compliant. Mineral sunscreens are less likely to block pores, making them an ideal choice for those with acne. Most formulas typically work as soon as they’re applied, whereas chemical sunscreens can take about 20 minutes to provide effective protection. They’re also less likely to wash off, making them a secure choice for those who plan on spending time in the water or engaged in sports.
  • Cons: Some formulas can leave behind a white cast on the skin. However, most newer formulas leave behind a natural tint that matches your skin tone. Also, zinc oxide particles in mineral sunscreens can break down, meaning you may need to reapply it more frequently than a chemical formula.

Chemical SPF

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation, convert it into heat, and release the heat from the skin. In the past, many people leaned towards chemical SPF formulations for their lightweight texture and sheer coverage. However, with significant advancements in mineral SPF technology, there's been an evolution. Thanks to these improvements, mineral SPFs offer a comparably sheer application, challenging the notion that only chemical SPFs provide such benefits.

  • Pros: Most chemical sunscreens are lightweight, easy to apply, and blend well into the skin. They’re also water resistant.
  • Cons: Many people don't consider chemical formulas environmentally friendly because chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate are not Hawaii-reef compliant. Additionally, these chemicals can irritate sensitive and acne-prone skin.

What SPF factor should you use?

Now that you know more about the different types of SPF and their formulations, let’s chat a bit about the different SPF factors. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of a minimum of 30 for daily use. This SPF factor, which blocks 97% of the sun's UV rays, is highly effective. It’s important to note that a higher SPF doesn’t offer much more protection. An SPF of 50 blocks 98% of UV rays, and an SPF of 100 blocks 99% — no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays. No matter which factor you choose, you still need to reapply your sunscreen approximately every two hours — more frequently if you’re in the water or sweating a lot.
