People of all ages can experience feathering and bleeding from lip products, but it's more common as we get older due to fine lines around the lips. If you experience bleeding but don’t have any definitive fine lines, it could be caused by excess oils around the lips. I’d love to share some tips I've learned along the way as a pro makeup artist for the last seven years, working on all skin types.
With so many lip product options available, how do you choose the right ones to prevent this issue? You might wonder, 'But what if my favorite lip products tend to feather and bleed?' Let's break down the different categories of lip products below.
Which types of lip products are more likely to bleed or feather, and which formulas tend to stay in place?
The shinier the lip product, the more likely it is to bleed. Matte or satin finishes are best to prevent bleeding. Like our EmpowerMatte Precision Lipstick Crayon, Sheer Strength Moisturizing Matte Lip Tint, or our Impact-FULL Smoothing Lipstick!.
What if you enjoy glossier/shinier finishes, or you're still having issues with a matte or satin finish bleeding?
Here are two ways to help your lip product stay in place while using the formulas you love!
How does a lip liner prevent a lip product from bleeding?
Long-wearing lip liner formulas create a barrier to prevent your lip products from spreading outside your natural lip line.
Lip liners like our Lip Filler Long-Wearing + Plumping Lip Liner are usually thicker in formula and drier in texture, which helps your creamy or glossy lip products stay within the lip lines since it creates a barrier.
‘’I’ve tried lip liner, but I still experience bleeding.’’
Oils and moisture can cause the lipliner to break down faster when in excess around the lips, so a great trick is to pair it with our Eye Lift 360 Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer to create an extra layer of protection that also absorbs the excess moisture/oils around the lips.
You might be asking why we would apply eye primer on the perimeter of the lips if the lip liner didn't work?
Our Eye Lift 360 Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer is a great multi-purpose product to help products stay in place and prevent creasing and caking. You can add it to concentrated areas like smile lines and eyelids to prevent creasing from oils breaking down the formula.
Our eye primer creates a thin matte smoothing veil over your fine lines, creating a barrier to ensure any formulas applied on top don't crease, and the tacky finish helps formulas stay in place. The barrier and veil specifically help migrating for those with fine lines around the lips, or if you have excess oils, the barrier helps prevent them from coming through and breaking down your lip product.
Why do you apply the primer to the back of your hand or finger and not directly on the lips or eyes?
Cross-contamination by transferring bacteria from the eye to the lips or vice versa can cause pink eye or irritation to the eyes or lips.
By not applying the product directly to the eyes or lips, you can prevent cross-contamination altogether. Use the back of your hand or a clean finger instead of applying the eye primer directly on the lips or eyes.
Lipstick bleeding and feathering can be frustrating, but with the right techniques and a few added products, you’ll continue to love your lip products–no matter your age or skin type!
Now you know which are the best products to prevent bleeding and how to use them. Like applying our Eye Lift 360 Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer around the perimeter of your lips above your base makeup, to create a barrier against oils migrating to the lips and breaking down lip products. If using a long-wearing lipliner, it didn’t create a strong enough barrier. Using both our Eye Lift 360 Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer and our Lip Filler Long-Wearing + Plumping Lip Liner together, as shared above, ensures a smudge-free, long-lasting look!
