Do I Put Color Corrector on Before Concealer? Is There Even a Difference?

With base makeup application, the level of coverage you are looking to achieve can determine the order in which you use your products. A quick and minimal base can easily be attained by using concealer to spot conceal any areas on your face. CC cream or foundation can be paired with concealer for additional coverage without it looking heavy on the skin. Using one product before the other depends on which look you prefer.

When it comes to achieving a light coverage base, you can use a concealer that is closest to your overall skin tone. This can be used to spot conceal and neutralize any discoloration, cover blemishes, or acne scars. Pair this with a concealer that is 1-2 shades lighter than your complexion to add some brightness under your eyes. A great technique when using concealer to spot conceal all over your face is to dot it on the areas where you are looking for coverage, wait 30-60 seconds, then tap the product into the skin to blend it out. Waiting for the concealer to dry down a bit allows the concealer to “set” slightly prior to blending it out which ultimately gives you the best coverage in the areas where you place the product. It’s also important to “tap” rather than use swiping motions on these areas because you want your product to stay exactly where you place it. You can use this tapping technique with a damp sponge, brush, or even your finger. A helpful technique is to tap it into the skin with a brush and lightly tap over with a sponge. You can use this same technique to conceal your under eyes as well. Using only concealer, you now have a perfect minimal, no-makeup makeup look!

For those who prefer a more full coverage look, this is where your CC cream comes into play. Spot concealing prior to using CC cream all over your face is a great way to add additional coverage. To avoid the look of “cakey” makeup, it is important to apply thin layers and build as you go. Following the steps shared above, use a concealer like the Buildable Blur Concealer first to spot conceal any areas on your face you feel need more coverage but avoid your under eyes entirely, we will get to that in just a moment. Once you are done with spot concealing, take your CC Cream and place a pea sized amount on the back of your hand. Warming up your CC Cream on the back of your hand with your finger allows the product to melt into the skin rather than just sit on the skin. Lightly dot the CC Cream all over your face (avoiding your under eyes) and use a brush to lightly tap into your skin. Using this light tapping motion will allow you to blend out your CC Cream without removing any product that you have placed down previously. At this point, your entire face is evened out with your application of concealer to spot conceal and CC Cream to add another layer of coverage, however, there is no makeup under your eyes. There are two reasons why leaving under eye concealer last is an excellent technique. First, the skin under your eyes is thinner compared to the rest of your face. Adding too much product in this area of the face can give a “cakey” look to the skin. Second, applying your brighter concealer at this point will ensure that your under eyes look illuminated and bright compared to the rest of your face.

There are many techniques you can use to achieve your perfect makeup base. The order in which you apply a CC Cream or concealer can help you create a minimal makeup look or full coverage glam. Trying out different ways to apply your makeup is the ultimate way to know what makes you look and feel the best! The most important thing to remember is that your technique can be catered to exactly the look you are going for which not only enhances your makeup application but your overall experience when taking the time to do your makeup.
