What Are The Different Types of Lip Products?

With so many lip products constantly circulating the market, it can be hard to differentiate the differences between them. There are lip balms, lip oils, lip masks, lipsticks, lip liners, lip tints— the list can go on and on! There’s always a myriad of choices to choose from, but how do you decipher which is best for you?

I truly believe lip products can transform a look. You can be completely bare-faced and throw on a bold red lip and totally upscale your look! Or you can rock a super dramatic eye look and pair it with a beige satin lipstick, allowing your eyes to hold center stage. Lip products have the power to enhance your makeup looks in the best way possible.

You can choose the different lip finishes based on mood, outfit, color, or their staying power. Here’s the lowdown on various lip products and how to choose what’s best for you:

Lipsticks:

This is your traditional bullet lipstick that glides and swipes easily onto the lips. If you prefer bold color payoff without sacrificing a creamy, luminous texture, then a satin bullet lipstick would be perfect for you! The Impact-FULL™ Smoothing Lipstick has up to 8 hours of staying power, which is perfect for those who love long-wearing lipstick without having the need to constantly touch-up their look. These vegan lipsticks not only moisturize the lips with instant hydration, but they also help smooth the appearance of fine lines, creating the appearance of more youthful-looking lips. Who doesn’t want that?!

Hydrating Lip Tints:

A hydrating lip tint is perfect for individuals who like an easy, mess-free application that provides their lips with a subtle tint of color. If you’re the type of person who quickly runs out the door without putting on any lip product, you can easily apply the Sheer Strength® Hydrating Lip Tint without even looking in a mirror. This tint gives your lips a wash of balmy color that brightens up and livens up your lips in just seconds. It provides 24 hours of hydration and is meant to truly enhance your natural lip color. These are great to have in your bag at all times, so you’re always prepared to provide your lips with a hydrated shine and a beautiful tint of color.

Matte Lip Tints:

Matte lip tints have recently become popular because of the  soft-focus effect they give. If you’re a fan of our Sheer Strength® Hydrating Lip Tint, but rather have a matte version that creates a blurred look on your lips, you should reach for The Sheer Strength® Moisturizing Matte Lip Tint. Typically, when people hear the word ‘matte’, they can be nervous of a product drying out their lips, and accentuating fine lines on and around their lips. Our moisturizing matte lip tint has our highest hydration claim of 48 hours, and contrary to popular belief, it immediately blurs the look of your lips, doesn’t settle into fine lines, and has a lightweight, breathable texture. If you’re looking for a lip product that has both long-lasting hydration and requires minimal touch-ups throughout the day, then this might be the product for you!

Lip Liners:

Lip Liners can come in various tips and angles, can either be wooden or retractable, and span across a huge variety of shades and hues. Lip liners tend to be the first step in many lip routines as they are used to shape the lips and give them definition. Here are some different ways to enhance your lip liner experience:

  • Enhance + define your cupid’s bow: draw an “X” on the center of your upper lip and then round it out toward the corners of your mouth

  • Contour your lips for a fuller-looking appearance: use a lip liner that is slightly darker than your natural lip color to create the symmetry you desire

  • Fill in your entire lip by making a base for other lip products

I like taking our Lip Filler Long-Wearing + Plumping Lip Liner™ and shaping my lips, specifically emphasizing my cupid’s bow, and then filling in the rest of my lips as a base before I apply other lip products. Our lip liner also helps prevent feathering + bleeding, which ensures that your lip products won’t travel outside your lip lines. And the coolest part is that it has a built-in sharpener at the bottom to ensure you can always achieve a precise tip!

Lip Gloss:

If you’re looking for a sheer, plumping, shine to add to your lips, then you need our Sheer Strength® Lip-Plumping Peptide Gloss! This peptide-powered lip gloss can be worn on its own to instantly plump and revive your lips with a high-shine gloss, or it can be worn on top of a matte lipstick, such as the EmpowerMatte™ Precision Lipstick Crayon, to bring shine and gloss back to any matte look. If you’re looking for a lip gloss that plumps your lips without the uncomfortable burning sensation, then the Lip-Plumping Peptide Gloss will definitely be your favorite! It plumps your lips through peptides instead of capsaicin, a common ingredient in chilli peppers, which is known to burn lips. You’ll catch yourself reaching for this product when you’re in need of an ultra-hydrating gloss that gives you smoother-looking lips.

Lip Crayons:

If you’re looking for the one hero product that both lines and fills in your lips, then the EmpowerMatte™ Precision Lipstick Crayon will be your go-to! The main difference between a traditional bullet lipstick and a lip crayon is that the lip crayon serves as a 2-in-1 product that allows you to line your lips with the precision tip and then fill in. Lip crayons can come in velvety matte finishes or creamy satin finishes, depending on your preference.

Lip Toppers:

Lip Toppers are great to enhance your lip look and add an extra shimmering touch. The main difference between our Lip Mate™ High-Shine Reviving Lip Topper and our Sheer Strength® Lip-Plumping Peptide Gloss is the shimmery pigment. Our limited edition lip toppers have a gorgeous sparkle to them that can be worn alone or layered on top of another lip product. Although this lip topper is formulated with sparkles, there isn’t a gritty or chunky feeling that leaves your lips feeling frustrated. I love layering a lip topper on top of a matte lipstick to add some dimension, sparkle, and a high shine to my look.
